Sand monster - Creature from the books about the witcher by Andrzej Sapkowski. A venomous insectoid that lives in the Korath desert,
using sand craters as traps for its victims.
"The sand at the bottom of the pit moved and rippled, she saw brown pincers peeking out from underneath it, with hooks on it, half a fathom long. [...] A cloud of sand flew upward, revealing a hidden monster clinging to the thigh of a squealing unicorn. Ciri screamed in terror. She had never seen anything so disgusting in her life, in any illustration, in any of the witcher's books. Something so hideous that she couldn't even imagine it before. The monster was dirty gray, round, and bulky as a bedbug drunk in blood, the narrow segments of the barrel-shaped body were covered with sparse bristles. He seemed to have no legs at all, but his pincers were almost as long as he was.
Devoid of its sandy cover, the creature immediately released the unicorn and began to dig in with the quick, violent jerks of its bulky body.
She attacked from behind, prudently keeping away from the snapping pincers, which the monster turned out to be able to reach quite far back. She stabbed again and the creature buried itself at an amazing pace."
